Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small child, forcing her mother to help support the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. Her school was closed in two years, to go into acting. Her path was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed to do was abyssal. Then in NYC, she volunteered at a bar as the check-in lady before resigning before moving to Boston. There she made a buck as an usherette by during the day and then at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. She was a drama student at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
